When to Plant in Westchester, NY: A Seasonal Guide

What to plant, seed and mulch in each season in Westchester County.

Spring: plant perennials, shrubs and trees once soil can be worked; mulch beds; seed bare lawn patches.
Summer: plant annuals and containers for color; water new plantings deeply and consistently.
Early fall: the best window for new lawns and overseeding, and a great time for trees and shrubs.
Late fall: plant spring bulbs, clean up beds and add winter-protecting mulch where appropriate.
Westchester County falls mostly in USDA hardiness zones 6b–7a, so choose plants rated for it.
